The tension was building, the audience was saturated with fervour and dance floor rhythms as the trio shook their booty in roaring twenties fringed shimmering purple, yellow and blue dresses. The band’s musical interlude was a tantalising introduction to the electric versatile and transfixing performance of I’m So Excited. This was yet another sensational winner in their sustained melodic approach to the music. The duet between singer and guitar player was mesmerising. The Pointer Sisters tribute to Aretha Franklin, singing Chain of Fools was an invite to bogey and have fun. They were instrumental in shaping the spirit of the performance and providing musical support that resonated with the integrity, professionalism and freedom associated with matchless creative expression. The backing band was not an extra but an integral part of the musical showcase and staging. They were intrinsically integrated into their performance. They were completely aligned to The Pointer Sisters eclectic vocals and dance tempos. She introduced the very remarkable band members, who radiated passion, rhythm and groove. Ruth Pointer explained with humour, her knee pad as kind of a result of a “situation going on… high heels are dangerous.” This was absolutely so, so, smooth, with voices easy to listen to and moves unabashedly absorbing to watch. Slow Hand exploded onstage and the audience was wild with enthusiasm as The Pointer Sisters cranked up the sensuous lyrics. The star studded band created a lush background that added to the high fever of the evening’s enjoyment. The band was astonishing and added to the lively interacting and exhilarating tone of the evening. The sound was punctuated by the choreographed unison of the movements across the stage by the divine trio. The song Automatic, one of The Pointer Sisters signature tunes, erupted with the richness and timbre that resonates from the lower register. The moves, grooves and sounds of He’s So Shy had the audience in a frenzy of syncopated twists and turns. ![]() Their distinctive singing, flamboyance and urban finesse transported the audience and launched a dynamic and evocative night of entertainment. It was remarkable to feel the vibrant three generation’s stage presence. They burst into the song Happiness and connected immediately with the audience and the night began with a dance floor staple. The three disco divas strutted on stage simmering in their individual red dresses and glowing in their contrasting hair one red, one straight and one curly. Sadako is the granddaughter of Ruth and the great-niece of Anita. Today The Pointer Sisters are the original Ruth Pointer, Issa Pointer, Ruth’s daughter and Sadako Pointer. The group had its first Top 10 hit with Fire in 1977 and their Australian chart success followed up with an astonishing nine Top 40 hits. The Pointer Sisters are three time Grammy Award Winners and have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. ![]() In 1978 Bonnie left to pursue a solo career and June died in 2004 and she was replaced by her daughter Issa Pointer. Later a quartet was formed when Ruth Pointer became a member in 1972. They grew to a trio when Anita Pointer joined them. The group hailed from Oakland California and started their career in 1969 as Pointers, A Pair with June and Bonnie Pointer. Their musical flair has crossed and evolved through many genres including pop, jazz, bebop, blues, country, gospel, post-disco and R&B. The Greatest Hits Headline Tour concert sizzled with their soaring vocals and unique harmonious style that has spanned a fabulous four decade history. So it was a dream come true for her when we both attended Metropolis Touring & Abstract Entertainment’s presentation of The Pointer Sisters recent concert at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney. Jump, you want to taste my kisses in the night then ![]() ![]() Jessica’s voice pumped around the house for years echoing the vitality and magic of the infectious music and lyrics. Jump (For My Love) released in 1984 was an international hit reaching an Australian chart peak at number 8 when Jessica was just six years old. My daughter Jessica’s favourite song as she was growing up was Jump (For My Love) sung by the Grammy Award winning vocal group from America The Pointer Sisters.
